| Born in Woodston, KS on April 27, 1894. James ran away from home at age 13. He lived in the Nevada desert for six months and worked as a diver for Scripps Institute of Oceanography. He then studied at the AIC and Metropolitan Art Institute. While a resident of San Diego in 1926, he operated an art gallery. By 1930 he had moved to Portland, OR where he worked on the docks . James died there on Jan. 22, 1969. Part Cherokee, his forte was Native American art.
