This biography from the Archives of AskART:

Jack Harold Markell (1919 -1979)

Jack Harold Markell was a painter who was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  He moved to North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1961 where lived and worked for the rest of his life and died.

His mediums were oil, tempera, pastel and mixed mediums.  His subjects were portraits, figures, still life, and landscape.  His primary style was Impressionism.  The influence of Jon Corbino (see below) is evident in much of his figurative work.

He studied at the Western Art Academy (Winnipeg) under Alexander Musgrove (see AskART) and at the Art Students League in New York (1940’s) under Jon Corbino (see AskART).  His travels include Europe  in the early 1950’s.

Markell was a member of the Winnipeg Sketch Club and exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (1953 – 56) and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (1947 – 1958).  His work was shown in the 1962 Stratford Festival of Art exhibition (Ontario) titled “Nine Prairie Province Painters” which also included Maxwell Bates (see AskART), Kenneth Lochhead (see AskART), Ron Bloore (see AskART) and Ted Godwin (see AskART).  His masterwork, King David, was in the first Biennial of Canadian Painting (1955) at the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), and was subsequently purchased by the National Gallery.

His works are in many private collections.  They are also in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Winnipeg Art Gallery (Manitoba) and the University of British Columbia (Vancouver).

He is listed in A Dictionary of Canadian Artists (1974), by Colin S. MacDonald; in The Collector's Dictionary of Canadian Artists at Auction (2001), by Anthony R. Westbridge and Diana L. Bodnar; in Art and Architecture in Canada (1991), by Loren R. Lerner and Mary F. Williamson; and in The National Gallery of Canada Catalogue of Paintings and Sculpture - Vol III: Canadian School (1960), by R.H. Hubbard.  His work is also discussed in Painting in Canada: A History (1966) by J. Russell Harper; and in Clement Greenberg:The Collected Essays and Criticism, Volume 4 (1993), by Clement Greenberg, edited by Dr. John O'Brian PhD.
