| Born in Portland, OR on Oct. 12, 1861. By 1884 Newell had settled in San Francisco and was a pupil of Virgil Williams at the School of Design. He produced portrait busts (one of Williams), medallions, and statuary until the earthquake of 1906. During the Depression of the 1930s, he was a plasterer. He died in Santa Barbara, CA on April 27, 1952.
