This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Maine in 1851.  Hamilton studied architecture in Boston and then apprenticed and worked there for eight years.  In the early 1870s he migrated to California and lived for a few years in Los Angeles where he probably apprenticed in the offices of older architects.  About 1875 he moved north to San Francisco where he worked on the new city hall under Augustus Laver.  He then established an architecture firm with George W. Percy.  With Percy, he designed and erected the Children's Playhouse in Golden Gate Park, First Unitarian Church, and the Masonic Temple on Van Ness as well as the museum, library and assembly hall at Stanford University, Alameda City Hall, and the Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton.  In his leisure Hamilton became an accomplished oil painter of such scenic spots as the coast at Point Reyes.  He died in San Francisco on Dec. 1, 1899.
