| Born in Los Angeles, CA on April 26, 1915. Purcell began his art training at age ten with Viola Patterson in Seattle. After graduation from the University of Washington, he continued in Los Angeles at the Art Center School, Chouinard and Otis Art Institutes. He was a set designer and muralist during the early 1930s and a freelance artist from 1938. Purcell was a resident of Santa Barbara, CA until his demise in Los Angeles on June 1, 1993
