| Born in Gillelije, a fishing village near Copenhagen, Denmark on Feb. 7, 1870. With his brother Elias, Max Petersen studied at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen. He then became a scenery painter for the Royal Opera House. At the turn of the century he moved to San Francisco. Unable to obtain work as a scenery painter, he opted to become a house painter while painting fine art in his leisure. About 1920 he was a visiting instructor at the CSFA.
