Born in Kofa, AZ on May 24, 1904.  Charles was the son of artist Marion Holden Pope.  He moved with his parents to Los Angeles while an infant.  In 1915 he moved north to Oakland and graduated from Oakland High School.  He then studied architecture at Stanford University and continued at MIT.  During the 1930s he was a member of the U.S. Army, but by the late 1930s was working in San Francisco.  In 1968 he moved to Washington, DC where he was a division chief for the National Parks Service for historical buildings.  From 1970-89 he again lived in San Francisco.  Returning to the home of his son, he  died in Richmond, VA on July 7, 1991.
