This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born on a cattle ranch in Colorado on Oct. 12, 1898.  Ellen's marriage to Fredhof Osterberg ended in divorce in 1921.  She then moved to southern California and spent four years in the High Sierra, Huntington, and Florence Lake areas sketching and painting.  From the late 1920s until 1937 she was Mrs. John Herman and had a studio in Long Beach.  In 1937 she settled near Santa Cruz into a studio-home overlooking the ocean.  Also a composer of music, one of her compositions, "Clearing in the Redwoods," was sung at the GGIE and won an award.  About 1950 she married a third time to Wm Hill.  The artist died in Santa Cruz on Oct. 14, 1980.  Her paintings include miniatures and full-size oils.
