This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Kilkenny, Ireland on Feb. 28, 1882.  Holland studied art in Cork before immigrating to the U.S. in 1905.  He served in the U.S. Marines until 1909 and then traveled and worked at various jobs.  During his meandering he had further art training in San Francisco at the Institute of Art during 1911-13, and in Portland (OR) and Chicago.  About 1929 he settled in San Francisco and took up art again.  During the Depression he lived in the old "Monkey Block" (now the Transamerica Pyramid) while employed by the Federal Art Project.  A fatal heart attack felled him in Golden Gate Park on June 3, 1947.
