This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Billy Roper born and raised in the North Georgia Mountains of Pickens County.  He has been referred to as a Folk Artist, Self-taught and Outsider artist.  North Georgia College and State University held a show called Billy Roper Visual Story Teller, because with each painting there is a story.  At the age of 42 he sold his first painting.  In the early years supplies were hard to come by and he painted on anything he could find.  One of his paintings is on a washing machine lid.  You will find most of Billy’s works today on canvas, wood and some on paper with mediums of acrylic, oil pastels and charcoals.

Roper has been featured in Southern Living magazine, The Dahlonega Nugget newspaper, North Georgia Living magazine, The Echo and The Nooze magazine.  Also one man shows included North GA College and State University in Dahlonega GA, The Buission Center in Dahlonega GA, Doug Macon and Co in Atlanta GA, and Sharptop Arts Center in Pickens County.  He has shown pieces in the Georgia Marble festival and won second place for a piece he calls Show Me yours First – Rabbits in I Wonder Land,  also for a show held by Sharptop Arts Center in Pickens County  Billy’s piece The Geisha Girl won first place.  His works have also been displayed at the Bowen Center in Dawsonville GA.

Billy’s passion lies in his wood carvings.  He can express his self not only in the carvings them self but, in his tools.  If a tool won’t do what you want it to, make one that will.  Billy remembers sitting on his father lap at the age of 3 and playing with his knife.  While just a small child his desire to carve was so strong he used a screw driver and hammer to carve on rocks.  He also enjoys carving marble pieces as well.

Music is a strong part of Billy’s life so strong that he has spent the last 9 months painting on an upright bass that will be raffled off in April 2011 at The Bear on the Square a music festival in Dahlonega GA all proceeds will benefit children whose desire is to learn to play a string instrument but, their family may not be able to make that dream come true.  He has hand made several banjos from scratch down to tanning the skin for the head.

Information provided by JJ Roper, the artist's wife.
