This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Wes Dewey was born and raised in southeast Kansas and spent most of his youth exploring the woods, prairies and abundant wildlife offered. His love of the outdoors and nature was instilled at an early age.  Being artistic most of his life, he began painting professionally in the mid 1980’s.

His passion was wildlife art, and he entered several “Duck Stamp” competitions.  He placed fourth in the first “Kansas Duck Stamp” competition in 1989 and won the competition in 1990.

Over the ensuing years, he placed in the top 10 of the “National Wild Turkey Federation Turkey Print” competition, placed eighth in the 2001 “Nevada Duck Stamp” competition, won the 1999 Kansas “Wildlife in Art Series” competition and was commissioned to paint the original artwork for the “Taggart/Wild Trust Memorial Print” to benefit the Cheyenne Bottoms in Great Bend, Kansas.

In the summer of 2000, Wes attended a Federal Duck Stamp workshop in Montana, where he worked with artists Dan Smith and Bruce Miller, both of whom were past winners of the prestigious Federal Duck Stamp competition. That year, Wes’ Federal Duck Stamp entry earned him an eighth place finish. The top 10 entries become part of a year-long nationwide Federal Duck Stamp tour.  Wes has also attended many “juried-only” competitions, such as the National Wildlife Art Show in Kansas City, the Wildlife Art Expo in Wichita, the Oklahoma Wildlife Art Festival in Tulsa and the Midwest Gathering of the Artists in Carthage, Missouri.
Wes was chosen to be the Kansas Ducks Unlimited Sponsor Print Artist, three consecutive years, which were in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

In 2010, his art was chosen for the 2011-2012 Louisiana Duck Stamp. During that same period of time, two pieces of his art were also chosen for the Kansas 150.  Dewey’s art was shown along with other chosen artists, at the Symphony in the Flint Hills in 2011. His art was also displayed in the book, Kansas 2011 State of the Art.

In 2012, Wes entered one of his oil paintings, January Rains on the Tallgrass, which depicts a prairie landscape, in the Richeson 75 International Seascape, Landscape and Architecture art competition. He walked away with Best of Show.
