This biography from the Archives of AskART:
David A. Melby was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1942.  He attended the Kansas City Art Institute, earned a BFA from Wichita State Univ. and a MFA from the Univ. of Nebraska and has taken additional studies at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel, Mexico.  Taught at Iowa State Univ., the Nelson-Atkins Museum, the Kansas City Art Institute, Rockhurst College, the United States Federal Penitentiary and Saint Mary’s College (Kansas). Lived in Leavenworth, Kansas in 1989.

Exhibitions: Western Illinois Univ.; Sioux City Art Center; Mitchell Museum; Joslyn Art Museum; Nelson-Atkins Museum; Des Moines Art Center; Wichita Art Museum; Gwend Jay Gallery, Chicago, 1989; Sandzén Museum, 2005.

Awards: Artist-in-Residence, Kansas Arts Commission, 1970; Fellowship, Mid-America Arts Alliance; Artist-in-Residence, Federal Penitentiary.

Collections: Western Illinois Univ.; Emporia State Univ.; Johnson County Community College; Mulvane Art Museum; Sheldon Gallery.
