| Douglas Houghton Campbell was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 16, 1859. Campbell studied botany at the University of Michigan, obtaining his Masters degree in 1882 and PhD in 1886. In 1891 he moved to Palo Alto, California and became head of the botany department at Stanford University. He painted as a hobby and was a member of the Palo Alto Art Club. He died there on February 23, 1953.
