This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Joseph Judd Pennell was born March 9, 1866 in King's Creek, North Carolina.  His family moved to Kansas in 1884 or 1885.  Worked as a commercial studio photographer in Junction City from 1888-1922.  After a series of partnerships, he operated Pennell’s Studio at 701 N. Washington and then at 801 N. Washington in Junction City from 1893-1922. Wife was Edith Stanley.  Pennell photographed the Junction City community and nearby Fort Riley from the late 1800s until his death April 3, 1922, producing more than 60,000 glass plate negatives and winning
awards for his artistry.  Portraiture was the centerpiece of his business but the collection
also documents American small-town life at the beginning of the 20th century.  Ten daybooks (studio registers) dating from 1896 to 1925 along with some personal possessions and the glass plate negatives are owned by the Spencer Research Library at the Univ. of Kansas. Our Home on the Plains (Lawrence: Univ. Press of Kansas, 2000) by James R. Shortridge documents Pennell’s work.
