Margaret A. Pitzer was born in Peggs, Oklahoma on February 28, 1932. Her family moved to El Dorado, Kansas in 1936. Taught basket weaving by her Cherokee great-grandmother and adopted the name Redfern in honor of her great-grandmother. She inscribed each basket with a tiny red fern on the bottom. Taught apprentices and shared her skills in workshops, demonstrations, and classes. She died on July 8, 1988 in Wichita, Kansas.
