This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Ross William Potwin was born November 30, 1888 in Lyons, Kansas.  He graduated from Lyons High School in 1906 and from the Univ. of Kansas with a BA in History and Physics in 1910.  He taught for two years in Herrington, Kansas then moved to McPherson, Kansas as principal of McPherson High School.  He became supertindent of schools in McPherson when George Pinney retired in 1913 and continued until his own retirement in 1957.  He attended summer school sessions at the Univ. of Chicago earning his MA in 1927 and completing all the classwork required for a PhD but he never finished his dissertation for the degree.  Potwin, along with Carl Smalley and Birger Sandzén, staged the annual McPherson High School Art Exhibits and helped assemble the art collection owned by the school.  He died in January of 1966.
