This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Clark Richert was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1941.  Richert grew up in Wichita, in a family of
mathematicians and scientists.  In High School he felt he was destined for a career in science when he discovered Abstract Expressionism and realized that he would be an artist.  He attended the Univ. of Kansas where he met Gene Bernofsky and where they staged the first "droppings," conceptual artworks that included objects that were dropped from the roof of a loft space onto the street below.  In 1965, Richert cofounded Drop City, an artist's commune near Trinidad, CO.  He remained there until 1968, when he returned to Boulder, CO, after a short stint in New York, and earned his master of fine arts degree in 1972. In 1974, he became one of five founders of Criss-Cross, an innovative artistic group.  Richert currently is Head of the Painting Program at the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design in Denver, CO.

Collections: Museum of Contemporary Art/Denver; Denver Art Museum; Nelson-Atkins Museum; Wichita Art Museum.
