This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Robert Amos was born in Belleville, Ontario in 1950.  Since graduating from York University in Toronto, he has pursued a career in the arts.  Arriving in Victoria in 1975, Amos became the Assistant to the Director of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (1975-1980) and spent a year travelling in Japan and Southeast Asia.  He returned to Victoria in 1981, and became the art writer for the Victoria Times Colonist (since 1986).  Amos was named an Honorary Citizen of Victoria in 1985, and was elected to membership in the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts in 1994.

Robert Amos is a full-time professional artist.  He is known as“the man who paints Victoria”, and has published four books of his Victoria paintings.  He is a specialist in painting homes and garden scenes.  In 2008 his paintings of Victoria were featured in an exhibition in the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo.  His paintings are included in the municipal art collection of the City of Victoria, the University of Victoria’s Maltwood Museum, and the Art Gallery of Peel in Ontario.

Artists In Their Studios, a book of Amos’s visits to 33 of the most interesting studios on the southern Vancouver Island, was published by TouchWood Editions in 2007, and was accompanied by an exhibition at the University of Victoria’s Maltwood Museum.  His next book, Inside Chinatown, published in September 2009 and will be followed by an exhibition of his paintings of Chinatown at the University’s Legacy Gallery.
