Pierre Guillaume is the pseudonym adopted by the Dutch artist Peter Willemse for his “plein air” paintings.  Guillaume began painting at age five and never received any formal artistic training.  In his twenties and thirties, he traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States, seeking inspiration and enriching cultural experiences.

Guillaume initially concentrated on the figural and realistic images, gaining a solid reputation and following in his native country the Netherlands.  Between 1980 and 1990, he had several one-man shows and group exhibitions throughout Holland.  In 2002, Guillaume abandoned his realistic painting technique – and his studio – and began to experiment with a freer, more spontaneous brushstroke.  It was at this time he adopted his pseudonym.

In 2003 he visited the Indonesian Island of Bali for the first time; this had a profound effect on the direction his art would take.  Inspired by the light and vibrant color of the island, and by the exuberance of the islanders themselves, Guillaume began a series of beach scenes.

Upon his return to Holland, Guillaume found himself repeatedly drawn to the sketches and notes made during his time on Bali. He returned to the island in 2005 for a prolonged stay.  During this second stay, he had a well received one-man show at the Duta Fine Arts Foundation in Jakarta.  Guillaume is presently preparing for an exhibition at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam.
