| An etcher, painter, amateur photographer, and active art advocate,
Josephine Hyde was Art Chair of the Long Beach city's Recreation
Commission, which organized frequent shows of California artists at the
Recreation Park Clubhouse. She also was founder in 1887 of the Women's
Sketch Club, the first women's art club in California. She was born in
San Francisco to an affluent family supported by her banker father,
Isaac Hyde. When she was a small child, the family moved across the
Bay to Oakland where she attended public schools.
She became a
student of Virgil Williams in the 1880s and 1890s at the School of
Design, and later studied in Japan with Kano Tomonobu and Shimomura
Kanzan.
By 1902, she ceased her art activity due to ill health and died at her home in Oakland at 4329 Terrace Street.
