Chan Yu, known for his portraits of iconic and famous personalities and for theme paintings of psychological issues such as loneliness and alienation from society. Chan Yu's works convey the uncertainties of human beings, who are posed
dream-like looking into distances, posing questions of meaning of
existence in this world and of modern people
suppressing their complicated selves and loneliness.
He was born in 1982 in Chongquin, China to Hong Kong-born parents. From the age of two, he grew up in Hong Kong but then moved to China to study at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute based in Chongquin. He graduated from the Sichuan
Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2005, and then earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2008.
As a young man, he had participated in his First Oil Painting Exhibition
in 2003. Since then he has exhibited work in many venues including Dubai, Basel, Switzerland and Miami, Florida.
uses single color as the basis of his painting, and creates the figures
by layering two or three colors upon the canvas. The result is similar to
“Multi-Exposure” in photography and to works of Pop Art master Andy
