A largely self-taught painter, David G. Setford was born in Letchworth Garden City, United Kingdom, in 1925, and currently resides in the Loire Valley with his French wife.

While at Oxford University in the late 1940s, after his service in the RAF, Setford became very interested in the architecture of Oxford, and he began to draw the buildings and colleges of the town, Architecture as a theme remains very important to him, as do depictions of Oxford.  It was in Oxford that he met his wife, who was then teaching as a French assistant at a girls school in Headingley.  With his mother-in-law (formerly a curator at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris) and his wife, he then began his art education, visiting galleries and museums, and painting en plein air, in the French tradition.  Becoming friendly with students from the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, and the Scottish painter Bill Cadenhead, Setford developed a strong graphic style, which owes much to Fauvism and Expressionism.

After settling in London in 1951, where he worked for a prominent brewery, Setford continued to develop his painting.  A formative experience was meeting Oskar Kokoschka in the later 1950s, when the great Austrian was lecturing at the Tate Gallery, during his residency in London.  Then in the 1960, Setford and his family moved to Burton-on-Trent in the Midlands, where he quickly established himself as one of the leading artists in the community.  He received his only formal art education at the Burton-on-Trent School of Art and Crafts, under Bauhaus-trained painter Gustav Sail, who had worked as a student of Kandinsky and Klee.  His expressive tendencies were enhanced by these meetings. At this time he was also introduced to L.S. Lowry, who advised him "...never forget your palette knife!"

Setford exhibited widely during this period, and after he moved to France (in 1985) in order to concentrate on painting.
