This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Noted for his New Yorker magazine cartoons, which numbered nearly a thousand between 1961 and 2006, J.B. Handelsman also had work appearing regularly in Playboy and the British publication, Punch.  His "visual style was characterized by its simplicity of line; his captions, known for their dry but no less biting wit, offered incisive commentaries on modern manners."

He was born as Bernard Handelsman in the Bronx of New York City on February 5, 1922.  As an adult he took the name John, preferring it to Bernard, but became known professionally as J.B. Handelsman with the nickname of "Bud".  He studied at the Art Students League and New York University.  In 1963, he moved to England, and stayed for 21 years, doing the weekly feature "Freaky Fables" for Punch magazine for 11 of those years.

Handelsman also did book illustrations for authors Robin Skynner and John Cleese, including Families and How To Survive Them (1983); Life and How to Survive It (1994
