 Frederick William Herring was the son of British born painter James Herring. He was born in New York City on November 24, 1821, and studied art with his father and with Henry Inman. Like them, he specialized in portrait painting.
He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1842 and 1851. He died August 13, 1899.
