This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Francis J. Haxby (1905 – 1976)

Born in Dundee, Scotland, Francis Haxby came to Canada when he was boy.  He received his artistic training at the Central Technical School and the Ontario College of Art, both located in Toronto.  He worked primarily as a commercial artist until 1926.  In that year, he painted a copy of a painting of Sir Adam Beck, the founder of the Ontario Hydro.  A photograph of this painting was published in the Toronto Paper, The Star Weekly, and launched his career.  In fact, there was a court case involving this work which revolved around the contention that Haxby had merely painted over a photograph.  While he traveled abroad to obtain sittings for his subjects, much of his time was spent in his studio in Thornhill, Ontario.  He also painted a large altarpiece for the Church of the Canadian Martyrs in Midland, Ontario.

He painted many prominent portraits including:
c. 1926-1928:  RJ Fleming, former mayor of Toronto and General Manager of the Toronto Railway and Power Companies
c. 1926-1928:  Peter Ryan
1928:  late Judge John Winchester, senior Judge of the County of York from 1903 to 1911
1939:  King George VI
c. 1947:  Honorable J. Joseph Bench, K. C. (also a Senator)
1948:  W.R. Saunders, principal of the Danforth Technical School from 1923 to 1930
1948:  Beatrice L. Ellis and Georgie L. Rowan, members of the Toronto Western Hospital Alumnae Association
1950:  W.J. Salter Former President of the O.E.A, and important Ontario educator
1952:  Joseph H. Harris, PC – MP for Danforth and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the East General Hospital
1952:  Walter Ziegler, former K-W Collegiate principal

He died of cancer in August 1976 at the age of 71.
