This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following information, submitted January 2013, is from the artist.

I attended Cooper Union Art School. After graduation in 1959 I was granted a scholarship to the Yale School of Art to pursue an MFA degree.

In New York during the early '60s with my friends Jim Dine, Tom Wesselmann and Claes Oldenburg, I participated in exhibitions and "Happenings" at the Judson and Reuben Galleries. At the same time I was learning to set type by hand and printing by letterpress. It was during this period and into the late '60s that I became acquainted with several art dealers including Leo Castelli, Richard Feigen and Dick Bellamy, to name a few. They hired me to design and produce all of their promotional material. Before long I became totally occupied by that work. With many new clients I was able to establish my own graphic design company, Marcus Ratliff, Inc. Gradually I became known as "Marcus" and only a few of my oldest friends use the shortened version of my name.

During the forty years as a graphic designer I did only a few collages for my own pleasure. I was too busy designing books, catalogues, announcements for galleries and museums. But finally, in 2008 I retired to Vermont where I now live and work, doing my own paintings, drawings and collages. I have shown some collages at the Big Town Gallery in Rochester, Vermont and at the AVA Art Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. An exhibition of my collages can be seen at the Century Association in New York City, from January 24th to February 15th.

A graphite drawing on paper from 1963 is in the collection of the Hood Museum in Hanover, New Hampshire.
