Ivald Granato Filho is a painter, engraver, draughtsman and multimedia artist.  He studied painting with Robert Newman in 1966.  He then spent a brief period at the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Ivald Granato began painting at an early age, drawing his inspiration from Cubist works. During the 1970s, he produced works which presented visceral or phallic images.  Granato works with rapid brushstrokes, creating figures with imprecise outlines, associated with signs, graffiti, graphisms and blotches.  He has produced various series of work, changing his style of composition with each theme treated.  Granato's works often combine references to daily life, a fantastic character and eroticism.

Since the 1970s, he has executed performances and interventions, making use of photography and video to document them.  Twice, in 1979 and 1982, he won the prize for best draughtsman of the year from the Associação Paulista dos Críticos de Arte - APCA [São Paulo Association of Art Critics].  At the start of the 1980s, he took part in events of the Banda Performática, of the artist José Roberto Aguilar (1941- ), which combined painting, music, theatre and circus.
