This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Melville Phillips of Malverne, Long Island, New York was a well-known portrait artist in the New York area in the middle of the 20th century. He lived with his brother Arthur, an illustrator and sculptor. Mel Phillips did many paintings of ballerinas and is not to be confused with Chicago artist Melvin A. Phillips.
Information provided by Larry Broido, whose family was friends with Melville Phillips on Long Island and owns a number of his paintings.
