| A Coast Guard combat artist during World War II, Richard Saar lived in Cleveland, Ohio, and in Laurel Canyon, California. As a combat artist, he recorded his first-hand experiences in the invasion of Luzon.
He is also known for his modernist ceramics and plein-air paintings.
He, with his wife Betye Saar, an African American collage artist, were parents of Alison Saar, a well-known sculpture and installation artist.
Richard Warner Saar died in Los Angeles, California.
