This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Leonard Hilton McGurr, AKA Futura 2000 (b. 1995)

Futura 2000 was born on November 17, 1955 in New York City.

An American graffiti artist, Furura started painting illegally in the early seventies (working with other artists such as ALI) on New York's subway.  Futura decided to abandon Graffiti and enroled in the US Navy for four years. He received a letter from Ali in 1979, asking him to return to New York. Both created the crew "Soul Artists of Zoo York of Zoo York."

Futura 2000 showed with Patti Astor at the Fun Gallery, along with Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Richard Hambleton and Kenny Scharf in the early 80s.  Also in 198, Futura began painting on-stage backdrops for The Clash while they performed.

Expanding his art into illustration and graphic design creating record sleeves, first becoming involved with The Clash; producing a sleeve for their "This Is Radio Clash" 7" single and handwriting the sleeve notes and lyrics sheet for their album Combat Rock.

More recently, he has become a successful graphic designer and gallery artist.  Futura's work is his abstract approach to graffiti art, making his art distinctive.  Futura pioneered abstract street art, which became more popular. Futura’s aerosol strokes are different from his peers, his works have fine lines achieved only through the use of an airbrush.

In the 90's he was involved with clothing companies such as GFS, Subware and Project Dragon. Futura's artwork has evolved into producing highly collectible toys, "Sneakers,” and diverse range of creative media.  Futura has worked with Recon, Nike, North Face, Medicom Toy, Undercover, Supreme, Levi's, A Silent Flute and A Bathing Ape.

At a store in Fukuoka, Japan, Futura designs his own clothing label, Futura Laboratories.
His art has also been exhibited at V1 Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark.
