From 1899-1930, Charles W. Hawthorne taught his students how to see and paint the full spectrum of light by using Provincetown's Portuguese population as models. The Portuguese people would model for the students of Hawthorne on the beach at the end of Pearl Street.  They would sit with the sun at their backs and from this the students of Hawthorne would paint the colors created upon the model.   Because the Portuguese have darker skin, the brightness of the sun facing the stu (showing 500 of 1665 characters).
