| William Mayo was born in Houston, TX in 1923. "Bill" Mayo moved to California as a teenager. While a star track and field athlete at Hollywood High School, he studied painting with Charles Bensco. By age 16 he was a skilled painter. He received scholarship offers to Princeton and Columbia universities, but joined the Air Force at the onset of WWII. He was killed in action in 1944.
