This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Dorothy Mae Russ McBride was born in Eureka, CA on March 9, 1906.  Viola (her mother's name which she adopted) Russ moved to Ferndale, CA in 1913.  She studied at UC Davis before her marriage to Rex McBride in 1932.

She was a pupil of Armin Hansen at the Carmel Art Institute in the late 1930s.  As well as a painter, she was a rodeo rider in her youth and later led the drive which saved the Victorian buildings of Ferndale.  She died there on Oct. 13, 1996.
