Biography from Brunk Auctions:
Following is text from the obituary of the artist from the Newport Daily News:

Age 92, of Nantucket, MA, Helen Wilson Sherman died peacefully on June 7, 2005.  She was the wife of the late Howard R. Sherman of Boston, MA and Newport, RI.  The eldest of seven children, she was born on June 2, 1913 in Providence, RI to Fanny Evans and Ellery Lewis Wilson.  Ms. Wilson graduated from Mary C. Wheeler School in 1931 and from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1935.

She was a renowned animal portrait artist as well as a student and teacher of Chinese painting. She studied under Madam Fan Tchun Pi.  She also studied watercolor with the late J.W. S. Cox and went to Italy with his class and then on to China with Dong Kingman's class and painted in both Greece and Peru.

Helen was one of James Hunt Barker's stable of artists at the James Hunt Barker Galleries in Nantucket. Her name appears in Who's Who of American Women Artists. She was a lifetime member of the Providence Art Club, and a member of the Newport Art Association of Rhode Island and the Nantucket Artists Association.

Her list of clients contains many distinguished names. Helen's paintings appeared in several dog breed books, and in a special book of the art collections of The American Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog.

Her most important work was for Barbara Bush, when she painted her dog Millie.  She authored The Joys and Adventures of Painting Animals.
