Biography from Greg Thompson Fine Art:
Jerry Phillips is a visual artist who currently lives in Little Rock, Arkansas.  He was born in Marshalltown, Iowa and received a BA from Florida State University, and a MFA from the California Institute of the Arts.  After graduation, Phillips moved to New York, where he established a studio and participated in exhibitions and visual projects for over a decade.

Phillips’ lush graphite drawings are based on details found in photographic imagery.  By digitally manipulating his images, Phillips creates abstract compositions.   He then renders the resulting image with layers of graphite to create a seductive and elusive collection of samples from popular culture.  The resulting drawings then comprise a history of hunting and gathering to build a kind of archival collection of visual encounters.  For Phillips, the act of drawing with a pencil is a conversation with time.

Phillips’ work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.  His drawings can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Museum Overholland in Amsterdam.
