Biography from a third party submitted on 09/17/2010:
When Richard completed his degree in 1952, he apprenticed for three years with master restorer Gustav Klimann at the Childs Gallery on Newbury Street. vIn 1954 he established his own conservator/restoration business in Boston and throughout New England, also working with Iso Papo of Brookline.

In the 1960’s Richard had married and, with his wife and two daughters was living in rural Woodstock, CT where he has remained for nearly fifty years.  He actively continued his successful business of restoration, while still pursuing painting in his art studio above the garage.  He painted mainly for himself, family and friends. Some of Richard’s canvases were presented at the Cathy Burt Gallery in Providence in 2001 and 2005.

Eventually, Mr. McElroy wound down his restoration work, referring many of his clients to his artist/conservator daughter Pauline, of Holliston, Massachusetts. This allowed more of his time for oil painting.  Over the years, Richard has completed some fine portraiture and realistic rural scenes, well composed, gentle and full of country light.   By the 1990’s his imagination began to come more into play, and he produced whimsical scenes of people at the beach and shore.  His unique stylistic figures convey relaxed and playful moods, full of bright color and vision.  Some pieces even reach into a world of mythical fantasy.  He was now working completely within his own compositions, emphasized by use of vibrant colors.
