This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Cornelius Cole Smith Jr. was born in Arizona in 1914.  Smith came from a military background which influenced his future art work of military themes.  His father commanded Fort Huachuca in Arizona in 1918-19.  The younger Smith returned to Fort Huachuca in the 1970s to serve as the post’s centennial coordinator.  Primarily a watercolorist, he wrote and illustrated the books “Crook and Crazy Horse” and “A Hell of a Christmas.”
