| | Hazel Watrous was born in San Francisco, CA on Feb. 12, 1888, the daughter of Stephen Watrous, a New England landscape photographer who settled in San Francisco in 1852. Hazel was educated at San Jose State College and Columbia University, and further studied at the San Francisco Art Institute under Piazzoni. Prior to 1915 she taught art in Alameda public schools. In 1922 she settled in Carmel, CA where she and Ethel Denny opened the first art gallery.
