Biography from ArtSanDiego:
Jim Garlock (b. 1953)  Painter, Photographer

Jim Garlock, painter and photographer, was born in Ohio in 1953.  He grew up in Claremont, California at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains.  Spending much time at an early age hiking the local hills and mountains near his home, he became interested in art and painting at an early age.  At age 21 after studying art for a time at Framingham State College he sold his first painting while working at an art gallery in Camden, Maine.

In the early 70’s he moved to the San Clemente area where he learned pottery from local craftsman Buddy Buell.  While there he was influenced by the Grateful Dead art work and surfing graphics of Rick Griffin.

In the mid 70’s Jim moved back to the San Gabriel Valley and became the Arts & Crafts instructor for 3 yrs at the McKinley Home for Boys.  In the late 70’s he taught painting, drawing and drafting at Damien High School in La Verne from 1979-1984.  During this time he also worked as a freelance graphic designer for Mr. Kevin Jenkins of the San Gabriel Valley Printing Company doing artwork for print publication.  For several years before leaving the valley worked in t-shirt design for a local screen printing company and also designed logos for local businesses.

After teaching and freelancing art a change in life and desire for adventure took him to the mining country of Northern California were he spent time prospecting for gold with famous miners Pieter Heydelaar and Sam Radding.  With them he created artwork and helped write several successful books on gold prospecting. One of his mining partners was a former art student and now well known gold prospector Ivan Fortin.

In 1985 Jim moved to the San Francisco area where over a 10 year period worked as an aerial photographer for a Real Estate company and studied at the prestigious Academy of Art in San Francisco.

His interest in California plein aire painting was sparked by a visit to a local thrift shop in the 1990’s where he came across original landscapes by Benjamin Brown and Orrin White.  These road show finds sparked a passion in him for collecting California art treasures, and inspired him to pursue plein aire painting.  Jim also spends some of his time restoring old paintings.  He now lives winters in Palo Alto, California painting in oils.  Spring and summers are spent in the Sierras of California or the deserts of Arizona hunting for gold and photographing nature with his dog Jake.  He has been influenced in his work by Edgar Payne, Benjamin Brown, William Wendt, Elmer Wachtel, and Conrad Buff.
