This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Chicago claims another prominent scenic artist in the person of Geo.W. Drayton,  whose reputation on the Pacific slope is an enviable one.  He commenced in New York at the old Bowery; later worked at Howard's in Boston, and returning was engaged at the Broadway Theater in 1860.

Until 1875 he put in his time in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston alternately.  At the latter date Baldwin's Theater, San Francisco, demanded his services.  Here he was very successful in his studies of mountain scenery, and created the scenes for the Danites.

Some of his best work was never exhibited to the public, being the scenery for Salmi Morse's Passion Play, suppressed by the authorities at the first performance.
