The miniature painter Mabel Hankey was born in Bath, England, the daughter of the
professional artist Henry Eddington Hobson. She became the first wife
of the painter William Lee Hankey, and exhibited with the Royal Society
of British Artists, the Royal Miniature Society, the Society of Women
Artists and the Royal Academy.
Hankey exhibited a portrait at the Royal Academy in 1907 of Lady
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the future Queen Elizabeth, wife of George VI. Also at the Royal Academy she exhibited a
portrait of Lady Elizabeth’s younger brother David in 1916 and another
portrait of Lady Elizabeth in 1917. The Countess of Strathmore also
commissioned a watercolour portrait from Hankey of her daughter aged
nineteen, a picture which eventually entered Queen Elizabeth’s
collection.
