Biography from Williams Fine Art:
| Steve Kropp grew up surrounded by the shapes, colors and beauty of the Colorado Plateau. Living in small towns in Utah and Colorado offered many opportunities to explore the back roads, the mountains, the warm sandstone rocks, hills and canyons. These experiences have strongly influenced and become an integral part of Steve’s visual vocabulary.
After studying with Harrison Groutage, Glen Edwards, and Adrian Van Suchtelen, Steve Graduated from Utah State University in 1982 with a degree in illustration. While still a student he visited New York City and was intrigued by the opportunities it offered to a young illustrator. Steve moved here in 1983 and began freelancing – producing paperback book covers. For the next several years, he followed his wanderlust to Denver, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City while pursuing a career in illustration, working primarily for the publishing industry. His award-winning illustrations have been included in Communication Arts Illustration Annual, Print Magazine’s Regional Design Annual, and Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles Illustration West 33. Friends, family and neighbors have enjoyed being depicted in various publications. Steve Currently lives with his wife, Christy and son, Ben in Cache Valley Utah.
Visiting the deserts of southern Utah reawakened his desire to paint the land. For several years he has been experimenting with mediums and approaches, producing watercolors, pastels, woodcuts and oils, exhibiting and winning awards in juried shows.
“This has been a refreshing, and creative Journey. The world that surrounds us is the ultimate source of visual inspirations. My paintings often have the feel of a real place, but they are usually a synthesis of memories, imagination and impressions in which photographic reference and filed studies are useful, but do not dictate the final result. For me, painting is a meditative process, wherein I allow a painting to develop and evolve, always seeking the poetic spark, the magic that brings life to a work of art.”
