Henry William (Harry) Hine (1845-1941)

Born at St. Pancras, London in 1845, son of Henry George Hine, illustrator on Punch and Illustrated London News, and his wife Mary Ann Eliza née Egerton, who married at Lambeth in 1840.  Formerly a mate in the merchant navy but by 1871 a 26 year old general draughtsman living at 26 Park Road, Hampstead with his parents, 59 year old Henry, a landscape painter, born Brighton, Sussex and his 54 year old wife Mary, born Finsbury, London and his seven siblings, including 29 year old Mary Esther (born 1842), a figure painter, and 19 year old William Egerton (born 1851), a clerk, all born at St. Pancras.

Henry studied at Accrington School of Art, the Royal Cambrian Academy and Académie Julien in Paris. A landscape painter and elected an Associate of Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour in 1879 and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1883.  He married at Hampstead in 1874, Victoria Susannah Colkett [q.v. Hine] and in 1881, still Henry, living at Holywell Hill, St. Albans, Hertfordshire with his wife Victoria.

He exhibited at Birmingham Royal Society of Artists, Dudley Gallery, Dowdeswell Galleries, Fine Art Society, Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Liverpool Walker Art Gallery, Leicester Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery, New Gallery, Royal Academy 1873-1897, two water colours at the Royal Society of British Artists ‘Sea Coast, Sussex’ and ‘Between Amalfie and Salerno’ 1875 and 1884, Royal Hibernian Society, and 150 works at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour, Royal Institute of British Painters and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colour, from London in 1880, St. Alban’s 1884 and 1898, Stevenage, Hertfordshire 1905 and Botesdale, Suffolk in 1906.

In 1891, now Harry, was still living in St. Albans with his wife and was still there in 1901 but by 1911, as William Henry, had moved Pulborough House, Botesdale, Suffolk, a 66 year old landscape painter and 70 year old Victoria Susanna, a painter & etcher, and sister-in-law 75 year old Emily Louisa Colkett, and kept a servant.  He died at Botesdale in 1941, aged 97.
