This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Idaho to migrant sharecroppers, Chris Appelhans became a comic book artist, animator, illustrator and painter of whimsical, fantasy scenes with children, odd creatures in landscapes, and mysterious genre.  He worked as a concept artist at Laika studio, Disney studio and currently at Dreamworks animations studios.

His drawings include Coraline, a modern-day Alice in Wonderland, Superman and Monster House, which are described as "honest, simple and innocent drawing that bring out childhood memories." (mymodernmet)  Appelhans said his focus on children comes from his admiration of them for having the capacity "to handle 'darker stuff' than they get credit for as long as the underlying tone is honest and hopeful."

Of moving from Idaho to California, he wrote with apparent 'tongue-in cheek' that he "eventually fled the peaceful valleys and clean air of his birthplace and relocated to Los Angeles, City of Moist and Bountiful Dreams.  There he befriended peoplefolk of all shapes and colors and learned to create works of Art using twigs, grass and other natural objects.  He currently sells these Art works to finance his lifelong addiction to cheese---in particular the Kraft Ole English variety of cheese spread."
