Biography from Gallery Henoch:
The Dutch artists of the seventeenth-century are largely credited with establishing the autonomous genre of still life painting.  While Rickus’ paintings owe to their accomplishment and technique, she steers clear of the rich old master style favored by some of her contemporaries.  Instead, Rickus utilizes strong primary color hues against soft, muted backdrops of pristine space.  A low one-to-one perspective brings the objects forward to the viewer’s eye level.

Like Cezanne, Rickus’ compositional arrangements are exacting and only accomplished with great labor. The subtle narratives that result are not lost on her viewers. Heather Haskell, Director of the Springfield Art Museum notes, “Visitors to her many exhibitions have enjoyed the unblemished textures, the glowing colors and the wonderful stories that Rickus is able to imply with the careful placement of one form against another.”

Rickus, a native of Massachusetts, has been painting for more then 30 years.  In 2006, Rickus was one of 8 state artists awarded a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which recognizes excellence in the arts and supports further development of their talents.  Her paintings are represented in major public and private collections internationally.
