Biography from Stillwell House Fine Art and Antiques:
American Artist James J. Hooley Jr known as Jim Hooley is known for his realistic watercolors, and oil paintings. His sharp crystal clear style remains consistent in most all of his works for over the past 50 years.

Although his father, a Boston band leader, wanted him to become a musician, Hooley taught himself to paint as a youngster and excelled. In World War II, he was a radio operator with the U.S. Army Airborne in Europe. A friend mailed him some crayons, and he got to work, painting scenes on attic walls where he monitored radio signals and drawing pin-up girls by fellow GIs' bunks, to their delight.

Back in Boston after the war he married, and began work as a printer. He continued painting in the evenings and on weekends, and joined local art associations. He taught watercolor in Milton, Canton as well as the North and South Shores of Massachusetts and Maine.  Later in life he taught, at the Milton Senior Center, where his helpful, laid-back style endeared him to his students.

Hooley’s paintings often had a calm, reflective quality, which matched his own demeanor. This gentle artist has left a rich legacy. Over the years, he gave away scores of his quick, demonstration sketches and sold hundreds of his oils, watercolors and pastels.

One of his favorite places for artistic inspiration and the work he sold the most of was the Swan Boats in the Public Garden in Boston. He was a member of Canton Art Association, Hyde Park Art Association, New England Watercolor Society, North Shore Arts Association, and Milton Art Association.
