A husband and wife team, Ruth Whittier Shute and Dr. Samuel Addison Shute traveled throughout New England and New York in the 1830s, producing portraits of "remarkable individuality and vitality." Some of the works are signed 'Drawn by R.S. Shute---Painted by S.A. Shute.'
However, by 1833, Ruth was painting alone because Samuel was ill. A review of her work in May, 1834 in the New York Plattsburgh Republican declared: "So far as we are capable of judging, Mrs. S. (showing 500 of 879 characters). |
