Artist Statement: Christiane Buell

The materials are traditional; oil on canvas and oil on paper. Oil paint is elastic and forgiving, which allows me to manipulate and work in it in an infinite number of ways. It is ideal for my gestural paintings, because I can pursue the process, which I need for my paintings.

A "controlled un-controlledness" is achieved and allows me to react to the materials but at the same time it goes its own way. The paintings are being built up in a slow process, during weeks and months, layer upon layer is being created, which will either be sanded, over-painted, or scraped away.

With this technique a structure is being developed in which story and content are hidden. The viewer can't see the hidden paintings visually but can only sense them.

The top layer consists of monochromatic design, which ties the paintings together. The forms are organic and remind me of elements from nature and the human body.

Constant moving, relocating, and extensive traveling, have forced me to adapt to new circumstances. My paintings thrive from a desire to decode new environments and situate myself in new locations. Spontaneity and freedom in my work have developed through living in the United States for many years. Substance and earthiness are being expressed through my European roots. The result is a transcontinental quality, and the two qualities compliment each other.

The process is like a spiral. A painting is never really finished, but develops an opening, which leads to the next painting. The process starts all over again; an endless chain is being created.

Biography from Missoula Art Museum:
Christiane Buell was born and raised in Switzerland, and lived in the U.S. for 20 years. A classically trained ballerina at the Swiss College of Dance and Ballet in Zurich, Buell came to painting after an automobile accident ended her aspirations of being a professional dancer.

She studied at the Swiss College of Fine Arts before moving to the Bay Area where she attended California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.

Buell was Artist in Residence at the Montana Artists Refuge in Basin.
