| ARTIST STATEMENT
Art is the primary motive of my life. I love to see
how people describe their sense of the world and themselves in it, and
have never been able to resist describing and reflecting on my own
experience.
Early in my life as an artist I decided that I would
allow myself to make the work that inspired and energized me regardless
of other considerations. To do this I have worked two or three days a
week at a job, lived inexpensively and devoted my time to making art.
Over
the past thirty years I have built a broad range of skills, techniques
and visual languages that combine many methods and artistic references
to better express the depth and breadth of my experience of life. These
varied courses of painting have come together in the complex framing
methods I sometimes employ. I can combine a lot of different styles by
physically layering images in their frames. This allows me to juxtapose
images and create a narrative form of painting without being too
literal, and provides surprise and intrigue to the viewer while
requiring them to process aspects of the work internally - because of
the various ways that the paintings physically operate. The Internet
offers an excellent venue for the exploration of the interactive
character of these works.
