Biography from Litchfield County Auctions:
Peter Marks was born in New York City in 1935. A lifetime New Yorker, Marks graduated from the High School of Music & Art in 1952 and from Amherst College in 1956. After a brief stint as a graphic designer, he opened Peter Marks Works of Art, Inc. in 1960, a private gallery specializing in Southeast Asian and Islamic antiquities.

He made important contributions to the Asian art field both as a dealer and as an advocate for his profession. Following his retirement in 2002, Marks returned to painting, a passion that had lain dormant since his high school years in the 1940s and 1950s.

Until he died in 2010, Marks painted full time, producing large abstract canvases, usually geometric compositions combining acrylic paint and gold leaf*. He also produced numerous drawings, studies, and collages*. His work synthesizes diverse professional and personal aesthetic influences, including early Medieval* paintings, Japanese Shoji screens, Abstract Expressionism*, and the visual landscape of New York City.
